THE FIVE CORNERS QUINTET - THE HELSINKI SESSIONS

In 2005, The Five Corners Quintet from Helsinki took the international dancefloor jazz scene by a storm with Chasin’ the Jazz Gone By, their debut album for Italy’s Ricky-Tick Records. For once and for all, the album proved that it is possible to look back while moving forward. The touch of producer-composer Tuomas Kallio was true to the golden era of modern jazz, and his vision in updating form rather than feeling resulted in music that is truly “postmodern jazz”, if there ever was some. The band consists off Teppo Mäkynen (drums/bandleader), Timo Lassy (sax), Jukka Eskola (trumpet), Mikael Jakobsson (piano), and Antti Lötjönen (double bass). Now six years later, The Five Corners Quintet has become known as a dazzling live band, which has notched some 200 performance worldwide to great acclaim. Ricky-Tick Records finally captures the magic on tape, releasing The Helsinki Sessions, recorded in the band's hometown in February 2010. The set's a live one, but done with all the tight, soulful energy you’ve come to expect from the group's studio sessions – still steeped in a love of the best American and European jazz modes of the 60’s – with an undeniable rhythmic pulse, and some especially tremendous solos. Some tunes here are familiar from the group's previous albums, but they're taken in really long versions, without any augmentation at all – an all-acoustic performance that really sparkles with tight tenor from Timo Lassy and soaring trumpet lines from the mighty Jukka Eskola. The piano, bass, and drums are completely riveting – and from the package right down to the sounds in the grooves, the record easily rivals the classic Blue Note or Prestige albums you might have in your record collection! Titles include "Unsquare Bossa", "Hot Rod", "Three Corners", "Shake It", "Skinny Dipping", and "Midnight In Trieste".
